Foreign Ministers of Turkmenistan and Iran discussed the forthcoming Caspian Summit of the Heads of State


The Foreign Ministers of Turkmenistan and Iran in a telephone conversation on Monday discussed preparations for the upcoming summit of the heads of the Caspian states in Ashgabat. Rashid Meredov and Hossein Amir Abdollahian also considered the implementation of bilateral agreements and some regional issues.
Abdollahian referred to the recent meeting of the presidents of the two countries in Tehran, calling it a turning point for a significant expansion of relations between Tehran and Ashgabat. The high-ranking Iranian diplomat announced Iran's readiness to fulfill all the joint agreements concluded, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry also announced Iran's support for holding a summit of the heads of state of the Caspian countries in Ashgabat.
Rashid Meredov also thanked the Iranian side for organizing the recent visit of the President of Turkmenistan to Tehran and also called this visit the beginning of a new stage in bilateral relations.
Meredov said that the ministers, heads of organizations and private companies of Turkmenistan are ready to meet with their Iranian counterparts for the practical promotion of the agreements reached during the meeting of the presidents of the two countries.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, on behalf of the head of state, once again invited Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to the Caspian Summit in Ashgabat.
Turkmenistan will host the summit of the heads of the Caspian states for the second time. The first summit was held in Ashgabat on April 23-24, 2002. Since then, the presidents of the Caspian states as a whole have met four more times.
At the last meeting on August 12, 2018 in Aktau (Kazakhstan), the leaders of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan signed the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, according to which the main area of the Caspian water surface remains in the common use of the parties, and the bottom and subsoil are divided by neighboring states to sites according to mutual agreement on the basis of international law.
