The State Program "Saglyk" (Health), initiated in 1995 by Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who was then the Minister of Health, became the basis for reforming the healthcare system of Turkmenistan.
The program is aimed at improving the availability and quality of medical services, developing infrastructure and preventing diseases.
Over the 30 years of implementation of the State Program Saglyk, dozens of hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centers have been built and reconstructed, including the International Medical Center in Ashgabat and specialized clinics in the regions, mass medical examination, vaccination and healthy lifestyle promotion programs have been introduced, and sporting events such as mass bike rides and Health Days are held annually.
In terms of international cooperation, Turkmenistan has become an active participant in the World Health Organization programs. In 2015, the country received a WHO certificate for eliminating malaria, and in 2019 - for success in the fight against non-communicable diseases, etc.
During this short period, new medical universities and training centers for specialists were established, which increased the number of qualified doctors and nurses.
The Saglyk program contributed to an increase in average life expectancy, a decrease in morbidity and an improvement in the health of the population. It also strengthened the international authority of Turkmenistan as a country committed to the principles of sustainable development in healthcare.
