Pompeo to spend new year’s first weekend in Central Asia

Earlier next week Tashkent will host next ministerial meeting under C5+1 format, said press-service of US Embassy to Ashgabat.

The meet, dated to the visit of the US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on 5-6 January 2020, will be attended by foreign ministers of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

The sides will discuss shared interest in peace and stability in Afghanistan, and future cooperative efforts in the region.

Consistent with the new U.S. Central Asia Strategy, the Secretary will stress U.S. support for a better connected, more prosperous, and more secure Central Asia, said press release.

In Tashkent during two-day visit he will meet with President Mirziyoyev and Foreign Minister Kamilov.

On the eve of visit to Uzbekistan, Pompeo will travel to Nur-Sultan, where he will meet with Kazakhstani President Tokayev, First President Nazarbayev, and Foreign Minister Tileuberdi.

According to earlier statement by foreign minister of Kazakhstan, during the visit to Nur-Sultan, Pompeo will present first-ever strategy of Trump’s administration on Central Asia. The document supposedly will be aimed at deepening the overall cooperation links between Washington and Central Asian “five”.
