Drama in the Europa League final – Sevilla won thanks to Lukaku’s own goal

Sevilla have won the European Football League final for a record sixth time in history. The match with the Italian Inter in Cologne ended with a score of 3: 2. For Sevilla and Inter, this meet was the first in tournaments under the auspices of UEFA.

Since the end of July, Inter have gained a very decent form and have not lost in six official matches in a row, conceding only one goal, but could not stop the victorious pace of the Spaniards.

Sevilla is associated with the Europa League more than any other club. Lopetegui’s trainees previously reached the tournament finals five times and won in all cases.

The Italians’ forward Romelu Lukaku is just one step away from breaking the record for the most goals scored for Inter in his debut season. He only managed to repeat the achievement of legendary Brazilian Ronaldo, scoring 34 goals in his debut season in a black and blue T-shirt.

The score in the match was opened already in the fifth minute, when Lukaku earned a penalty and confidently converted it.

Sevilla’s response was not long in coming. After a combination on the right flank Navas made a pass to the near goalkeeper’s corner, where tall De Jong shot the ball with his head into Handanovic’s goal net.

At the 35th minute, the Dutch forward again played amazingly with his head; his aimed shot brought Sevelle forward. De Jong became the first footballer to score two goals in a Europa League final with the head.

But Inter responded immediately. Lukaku earned a free-kick, Brozovic made a filigree pass, Godin cut around his opponents and drove the ball into the net with his head.

The exchange of kicks in the first half ended in a draw, and only one dramatic moment decided the fate of the second. Sevilla defender Carlos scored a delightful overhead goal. The ball seemed to go past the goal mouth, but omnipresent Lukaku shot out his leg trying to knock out the ball and resent it into his own goal. The Belgian’s mistake turned out to be fatal for Inter.

Sevilla defeated Inter in the final and won the tournament. Now, the Lopetegui’s team will take part in the UEFA Super Cup to be held in Budapest on September 24.

Sevilla will compete 4with the winner of the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and German Bayern Munich to take place on August 23.
