In January-September 2018, 190 thousand tons of non-oil goods were transported via Azerbaijan from Turkmenistan, Trend Agency reports with reference to the Minister of economy of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev.
However, the figures do not reflect the overall potential of transit from Turkmenistan through Azerbaijan, and as Mustafayev stressed, during his remarks at a press conference on the transport and transit potential of Azerbaijan, this figure will increase tenfold in the future.
The serious foundations for the expansion of Turkmen cargo flows through Azerbaijan have been laid during the Ashgabat meeting between two president held this week. Ten of the twenty documents from the signed package are aimed at streamlining cooperation in the transport and logistics sector. The visa regime for cargo carriers will be simplified, contacts between the Caspian ports, road and rail transport will be further developed.
A new Joint Commission on transport, transit and logistics will have to work on specific practical issues.
In addition, the Azerbaijani side has already allocated a place in the Baku international trade port of Alat to receive additional cargo from Turkmenistan.
According to the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan, the trade turnover with Turkmenistan exceeded US $ 125 million in January-October this year. The share of Turkmenistan’s exports prevails, estimated at over US $ 100 million.
