In 2018, over 400 trains were run from Bolashak border station, Kazakhstan, of the Mangystau branch of the railroad, to Turkmenistan, which is twice higher as in 2017, the newspaper Delovoy Kazakhstan reports.

In 2018, the volume of freight transported through Bolashak border railway crossing of Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan rail network exceeded 1 million tons of various cargoes, having increased by more than 410 thousand tons compared with the previous year, the publication notes.

The freight includes various agricultural products from Kazakhstan, such as wheat, flour, milled products, barley, oats, lentils, which are transported through the Kazakh-Turkmen border Bolashak station.

Bolashak – Serkhetyaka railway crossing was opened in 2013 with participation of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. It is the north part of the transnational railway corridor that connects Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran and provides freight traffic from the land to the sea routes to the Persian Gulf region.

In December 2014, with participation of the heads of three states – Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Iran, the south section of the railway corridor was opened. It allows direct delivery of goods between countries using the shortest route as well as to reduce delivery time of transit cargo. Chinese freight forwarders have already appreciated this route, and plan to increase the number of container trains alng this direction.

According to experts, by 2020, the volume of traffic through Bolashak – Serhetyaka international railway crossing may exceed 15 million tons of cargo.
