Legendary story of Leyli and Mejnun: a new reading

On November 22, the new production Leyli and Mejnun took place on the stage of the Student Theater named after Mollanepes in Ashgabat. The tragic love story, reproduced by fifth-year students of the Turkmen State Institute of Culture, was shown as part of the international theater festival’s programme.

Production director Urmatkan Melayeva used non-standard techniques in staging scenes of the play. Atmospheric scenery depicts the inspired world of lovers. Nothing bodes ill. It seems that the lives of the heroes will be forever filled with joy and happiness.

And if in the first half of the play the viewer observes a picture of the ease of being, then by the middle of it the colors begin to darken, a presentiment of inevitable tragedy keeps the spectators in suspense until the end of the theatrical performance.

Many theaters have repeatedly turned to a plot of the legend of Leyli and Mejnun, based on which operas and dramatic productions were staged. Students of the Institute of Culture played a play adapted by People’s Writer of Turkmenistan Govshutgeldy Danatarov. It was impossible to remain indifferent to such a mystical production. And although the actors are very young, they gained a strong sense of the fate of their heroes.

A special mention should be made of Sheyda Kurbanova and Chary Amandurdiyev who played the main roles. Their subtle artistic play conveyed the purity of the high feelings of the first love. Eastern Romeo and Juliet are facing the disagreement of parents to accept the choice of their children. And the heroes are not destined to be together in this world, but the material world cannot become an obstacle to true feeling.

The new production on the stage of the Student Theater was successful and given an enthusiastic welcome by the spectators. The audience greeted with unceasing applause the beginning actors who will soon join the Turkmen theater companies.
