“Today we have completed the process of agreeing on a very important document initiated by the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, a program to increase the activity of partnership in the foreign policy sphere between the CIS countries. This document sets the guidelines for all our future work in international organizations and at other venues, including regional structures such as the OSCE, and this is very useful,” said the head of the Russian foreign ministry during his address to the press.
Lavrov also expressed gratitude to the Turkmen side for the excellent organization of the work of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth.
“In general, there is a very busy agenda, and I think we have prepared tomorrow’s summit well,” the Russian diplomat noted. “I am sure that the heads of state will make important strategic decisions aimed at deepening and strengthening the CIS.”
Answering ORIENT’s question about Turkmen-Russian relations, Lavrov said that they are in very good condition and are constantly progressing. Our presidents meet regularly, there are regular contacts at the level of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, including heads of foreign affairs agencies and departments, deputy ministers.
“We agree on a number of issues, which then become important topics on the agenda of the United Nations. We cooperate on the Caspian issue and actively support the initiatives of Turkmenistan in terms of approximating the principles of international cooperation in the energy sector. Today’s visit has confirmed that our relations are on the rise and we have every reason to believe that the agreements of the heads of state in all areas will be implemented,” the Russian Foreign Minister summed up.
