The Caspian region should remain the region in which the Caspian Five – Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan – is responsible for everything that happens, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
In a meeting with the acting governor of the Astrakhan region, Sergey Morozov, he noted that full-fledged cooperation between all Caspian states is developing in the Caspian region.
Lavrov stressed that Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan are good foreign policy partners of Russia.
“It is very important for us that the Caspian region, as provided for by the convention, be preserved as the region in which the Caspian Five is responsible for everything that happens,” the minister said.
The Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea was signed after years of negotiations, in Aktau, Kazakhstan, at the 5th summit of the heads of the Caspian littoral states. Speaking at the summit, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed that “the Caspian Sea must forever become a zone of peace, good neighborliness, mutual understanding and trust, and all issues here need to be resolved only by peaceful, negotiating means.”
