Lands of the Turkmen lake can fill up the Ramsar list

The Ramsar list of wetlands in 2020 can be replenished with the Turkmen South Cheleken gulf together with the island of Ogurjaly and Kelif lakes, including the Kelif ornithological reserve.

At the working meeting of the working group of the Ramsar Convention in Ashgabat, Turkmen experts informed that it is also planned to submit for nomination the lands of Turkmen Lake, a reservoir named after the 15th anniversary of independence, lakes of Gurtly, Sultandag and Sarykamysh. The lands submitted for nomination will be selected on the basis of their international value from the point of view of ecology, botany, zoology, limnology or hydrology.

In the near future Turkmen experts will take part in a rapid assessment of environmental characteristics and ecosystem services, mapping and creating a database of wetlands in Central Asia.

The Ramsar Convention on wetlands is the intergovernmental agreement, the purpose of which is «preservation and reasonable use of all wetlands by realization of local, regional and national actions and international cooperation».
