The 2024 Winter Youth Olympics will be held in South Korea. Such decision was adopted at the 135th session of the International Olympic committee (IOC) which took place in Lausanne.
Competitions will be held in two cities – Gangneung and Pyeongchang. In Pyeongchang competitions in skiing events, bobsleigh and luging sports will take place, and Gangneung – will act sportsmen in ice events.
In Pyeongchang two years ago South Korea hosted the Winter Olympic Games.
South Korea was a unique candidate to hold the Winter Youth Olympic Games as the IOC has applied for the first time a new procedure of choice of the country for holding the Olympic Games, confirmed in the summer of last year. The Olympic capital was selected not as a result of application campaign, and by dialogue of a special commission with interested parties. 79 delegates voted for holding the games in this Asian country.
Besides it, the 135th session also has selected the IOC three new members for its board. They were Gianni Infantino, President of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), David Haggerty, President of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Yasuhiro Yamashita, President of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC).
Three cities – Barcelona (Spain), Salt Lake City (USA) and Sapporo (Japan) expressed their interest in holding the 2030 Winter Olympic Games.
