In Turkmenistan the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the child was marked

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan the conference organised by the UNICEF in honour of the 30th anniversary of adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the child was held. In the opening speech UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan Christine Weigand noted that from the moment of adoption by the UN General Assembly the given convention, it became one of widely ratified agreements on human rights. It is also a unique international contract in this area which gives to the non-governmental organisations to conduct control over its realisation.

– In the face of new threats, and also new possibilities for children in the today’s quickly changing world, our duty consists in that the governments and business communities continued to work together on maintenance of the rights of each child, – Weigand told.

– We should fulfil the promise given 30 years ago to protect and keep the future of children, to accelerate already reached progress and to develop new decisions for embodiment of the rights into reality, – underlined in the video message the UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore.

This year 25 years become from the date of ratification of the given Convention by Turkmenistan as well. It is the first international convention on human rights which the country after independence joined.

Practical realisation of the Convention on the rights of the child and other basic international documents in the field of protection of the rights, interests of children and youth is development of national programs and the action plans. Last year the National plan of action on the rights of the child – the document reflecting priority actions which Turkmenistan undertakes in reply to recommendations of Committee about the rights of the child was adopted. Adoption of the national program on nutrition and strategy on early development of the child is planned.
