“How to assist?” – A competition to share ideas and projects to support refugees is announced

“How to assist?” – A competition to share ideas and projects to support refugees is announced

On the occasion of the of the World Refugee Day, UNHCR for Central Asia (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) is organizing competition for young people from Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The pandemic outbreak has caused a crisis in the economy and impacted many people who were forced to abandon their usual job and life. But its impact on people across the globe was not equal.  Certain vulnerable groups, including refugees, have been hit the hardest by the pandemic; refugees had to leave the country they lived in and find a safe place somewhere else.

Young people aged from 16 years old and above are encouraged to share their ideas and prepare a project on how refugees can be supported to recover from difficult situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in one of the following areas:

  • Education and skills development of refugees after the COVID-19 pandemic: How to help refugees access learning opportunities and benefit from them?
  • Economic well-being and employment of refugees after the COVID-19 pandemic:

How to help refugees integrate into local labour markets after COVID-19?

The organizers of the competition hope that by studying the issue of refugees and stateless persons, young people – future policy makers, senior officials, organizers, medical and social staff – would be able to better understand the processes that enforce people to leave their homes and restart a new life in a new place. And perhaps find solutions to make a difference.

In this context, today, Turkmenistan is actively addressing the issue both at international and national levels. Since 2005, the country has granted citizenship and provided access to learning and profession opportunities to more than 23 thousand refugees and stateless persons.

Project needs to be submitted no later than June 10, 2020 to email: kazalres@unhcr.org  For more information about competition and its requirements, please, visit the official website of UNHCR for Central Asia If you have any questions, please send email to kazal@unhcr.org
