The 83rd session of the Economic Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States was held in Ashgabat
During the meeting in a narrow – at the level of the heads of the delegations – and extended format, the documents that to be presented at the upcoming Summit of the heads of the CIS countries and the Council of Heads of Government in Ashgabat in October this year were considered.
The Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Sergey Lebedev held a press-conference on the results of the session.
According to him, the draft Declaration on strategic economic cooperation between the states of the Commonwealth was one of the main documents of the current agenda of the CIS Economic Council.
– The project of the Declaration, which was initiated by the Turkmen side in 2017, was approved today at the level of deputy prime ministers. The final decision will be made on October 11 at a meeting of the CIS heads of state in Ashgabat,” Lebedev said.
The draft Declaration was prepared and put on the agenda of the CIS Economic Council by Turkmenistan in cooperation with the CIS Executive Committee. Galina Romanova, the Head of State Finances and Economic Policy Department of the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, presented it at the session.
In an interview with ORIENT, she commented:
– The main goal of the Declaration is the development of strategic economic partnership, further strengthening the fundamental basis of the Commonwealth, its integration into world economic relations, including through a significant increase in the economic potential of the CIS. In general, I would like to note that the document is focused on increasing the international prestige of the Commonwealth.
Galina Romanova also added that the project was actively discussed in all CIS member states.
– Many suggestions and recommendations have been received, which testifies its importance and relevance for our partnership. CIS countries have shown a high interest in the effective using of all opportunities of economic cooperation. Therefore, while discussing and working on the Declaration, the Turkmen side acted on the premise that the project should be balanced in nature, and its content should reflect the interests of all Commonwealth states.
– In the latest version of the document, we tried to constructively and flexibly consider the amendment of certain paragraphs, take into account the interests and wishes of the CIS member states. In our opinion, all comments and suggestions received from the CIS member states on the draft Declaration have been fully taken into account and the document is ready for signing,” Romanova summed up.
