China tests high-speed train on magnetic levitation

China’s Ministry of Transport has published a report on the development and tests of high-speed train on magnetic levitation with a top speed of 600 km/h.

The People’s Daily newspaper informs, at present, trains have a maximum operating speed of 350 km/h, and while the cruising speed of an aircraft is 800-900 km/h. The 600km/h maglev train would fill a gap between high-speed rail and air transportation.

Based on the calculation of the actual travel time, for a distance of 1,500 km, a high-speed magnetic levitation, or maglev, train will be the fastest means of transportation. For example, that is roughly the distance from Beijing to Shanghai, a journey that takes about 4.5 hours by plane, including preparation time, and about 5.5 hours by high-speed train. The maglev would cut that to about 3.5 hours.
