President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, speaking at the forum “Turkmenistan and International Organizations: Cooperation for Peace and Development”, held in Ashgabat, said that on December 12, Turkmenistan would hold a high-level international conference, devoted to neutrality and its significance.
The head of state invited representatives of international organizations to make suggestions on the organization and agenda of this conference, and its final document.
“Turkmenistan has chosen a model of positive neutrality and formulated its main provisions: peacefulness, non-interference in the affairs of other states, respect for their sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-participation in international military organizations and treaties,” said the Turkmen leader.
As the head of state noted, time has shown that this policy correspondence with the long-term goals of the UN, the interests of states and peoples of the world for peaceful and secure development.
Mr. Berdimuhamedov reminded that precisely Ashgabat under the auspices of the United Nations hosted a series of negotiations that played an important role in achieving peace and harmony in Tajikistan, the settlement of the Afghan conflict in the late 90’s.
The role of the UN’s ally and effective partner also led to the decision to open the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in Ashgabat in 2007.
“We took it as a huge responsibility and at the same time as evidence of trust in Turkmenistan on the part of the United Nations,” said the President.
“The UN can always count on the support of Turkmenistan, which uses political and diplomatic means to create an atmosphere of mutual understanding and trust in the region,” said Berdimuhamedov.
