The President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held a meeting with the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, who arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the Summit of the Heads of States’ Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
The heads of state reaffirmed the parties’ commitment to the traditional relations of friendship and good neighborliness, mutual intention to strengthen the Turkmen-Russian dialogue. The strategic nature of interstate relations was noted.
The presidents discussed potential in the trade-economic sphere, opportunities to advance contacts in various sectors, including via business. The activities of the Intergovernmental Commission, the Turkmen-Russian and Russian-Turkmen Business Councils, as well as joint business forums are of great importance. The cooperation between Turkmenistan and the largest regions of the Russian Federation, including the Republic of Tatarstan, Astrakhan region and Sverdlovsk region, the city of St.Petersburg, etc. has a dynamic nature.
Presidents Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Vladimir Putin also stand for the further development of traditional cooperation in humanitarian sphere, the strengthening of relations in education, science and culture, as well as exchanged views on a number of topical issues on the regional and global agenda.
Turkmenistan and Russia are also set to continue effective cooperation in the Caspian Sea, where there is considerable potential. In this aspect, the importance and effectiveness of the I Caspian Economic Forum, held in Avaza in August, were noted.
The leaders of the two countries expressed confidence that the current summit under the chairmanship of Turkmenistan will serve to promote cooperation in the Commonwealth, and to work out its new promising areas.
