German Chancellor Angela Merkel believes that the Silk Road project is very important and Europeans want to play an active role in it. According to RIA Novosti news agency, the head of the German government made such a statement in Paris after talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, Chinese President Xi Jinping and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. These negotiations were held on the eve of the EU-China summit, which will be held on April 9th in Brussels.
“I think the Silk Road project is very important. We Europeans want to play an active role in this project and participate. This should lead to a certain reciprocity,” Merkel said.
“The project as such is a very good visualization of what determines our dependence on each other and our mutual connection,” the chancellor added.
The concept of “One Belt – One Way” is an international initiative of the Middle Kingdom to improve the existing and create new trade and transport corridors connecting more than 60 countries of Central Asia, Europe and Africa with China. One of the most important regions in this project is Central Asia, and in particular, Turkmenistan, which has a developed transport infrastructure.
Ashgabat is an active player in the project, launching new initiatives to develop the transport and transit sector, which enrich the Silk Road and enhance its effectiveness.
Thus, the last initiative of Ashgabat to create the Caspian Sea – Black Sea transport corridor was discussed in early March this year in Bucharest at a four-sided meeting of the foreign ministers of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Romania. The project involves the creation of a transport corridor passing through the ports of Turkmenbashi, Baku, Poti, Batumi and Constanta.
