Afghanistan has again became a participant of the World Organization of the Scout Movement

The Ministry of Education of Afghanistan stated that the Afghanistan National Scout Organization after a break more of than 40 years again became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement as the Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) reports.

Representative of the Education Ministry of IRA Nuria Nejat stated that Afghanistan became 171st member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). Participants of the Afghanistan National Scout Organization can participate in all international programs of WOSM – festivals, seminars, conferences and symposiums, including concerning the all the issues of world, environment, human rights, and solar energy use and etc.

According to the Ministry of Education of Afghanistan in the Organization of National Scout Movement in the country now there are 11 thousand young members headed by professional instructors. They have been selected from among schoolboys, children’s homes and residential areas.

For the first time Afghanistan has become a member of the international scout (youth) movement in 1958, but in 1979 membership was suspended for political reasons.

The Ministry of Education of Afghanistan stated that its efforts undertaken last years, helped to redeem the position of Afghanistan in the given organisation. Today, Scouting has emerged once again at the local level as a result of the collaboration between World Scouting, the Afghan government and international non-governmental organisation Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Support to Afghanistan (PARSA).

More than ten training courses have been organised in different provinces across the country. The courses have enabled Afghan Scout leaders to earn their Wood Badge and reintroduced Scout activities through the Messengers of Peace Programme and the World Scout Environment Programme. Courses have allowed the Afghani scout leaders to renew activity of scouts within the limits of the Program «Envoys of the world» and the World program of preservation of the environment.

“The resurgence of Scouting in Afghanistan has been made possible thanks to the dedication of volunteers and the enthusiasm of young people. As a result of this renewed commitment by government and local leaders, a new generation of young Scouts will redefine their purpose and contribute as active citizens towards building stronger, more resilient communities,” said Ahmad Alhendawi, Secretary General of WOSM.

World Organization of the Scout Movement was founded in 1920. Now this is the world’s largest educational movement. The organization’s headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland.

The word “scout” in translation from English means a person or solider who gathers information. The motto of scouts is «Be Prepared!”.
