863 stateless persons, constantly living in the territory of Turkmenistan, have become Turkmen citizens. The corresponding decree at the government session held in the videoconference format has been signed today by president Berdimuhamedov, informs the State News Agency TDH.
In the document it is noted that this decision is based on adherence to the conventional international norms on protection of the rights and freedom of the person, and also considering the right of people to free choice of citizenship.
The document assigns the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and State Migration Service together with other state institutions to continue work on official registration of papers of stateless citizens, who have applied for citizenship of Turkmenistan, with making subsequent corresponding proposals to the president of the country.
Signing the decree the head of the state has underlined that thus, Turkmenistan, according to the Constitution and Conventions of the United Nations on refugees and human rights, assists stateless individuals.
The Turkmen leader has charged the vice-premier, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov and the secretary of the State Security Council Yaylym Berdiyev within a month to provide with passports of citizen of Turkmenistan people to which citizenship of the country is given. And heads of regional administrations were commissioned to organise a solemn granting ceremony of passports and, in case of need, to help new citizens of the country with employment and housing.
